Lies to Tell

My Child

by Kari O'Connor

(After Raul Guiterrez)

‚Äč

A conch shell told us your name.

The stars are all misplaced punctuation.

Eclipses happen

because the earth is jealous

of the moon and sun seeing each other.

Every time you laugh,

a flower blooms.

Sometimes,

you will dream sensibly.

Always is real.

The dog dreamed of you

before you were born.

And the cat

brought your tears.

Ocean waves

are awkward handshakes.

You will always remember this.

Your shadow

is a ghost sibling

that can't let go.

You will always be happy.

Trees hold the sky up.

You will always need me.
